EXHIBITION “TRỜI, NON, NƯỚC | ALLUSIVE PANORAMA”

The exhibition “Trời, Non, Nước | Allusive Panorama” is the first and largest retrospective exhibition to date featuring the artworks of King Ham Nghi in Vietnam. Showcasing 20 paintings curated from 10 domestic collections, the exhibition offers a profound perspective on the life of a King who was also an artist during his years of exile in Algeria. Concurrently, it stands as a signature “Boutique Art” project by Dream Studio.

The project’s core challenge lay in optimizing the budget to transform a highly familiar venue, the Thai Hoc courtyard at the Temple of Literature, into an integral component of the opening ceremony. Furthermore, Dream Studio had to navigate a delicate balance: avoiding a literal, direct illustration of literary concepts while keeping the public's attention fully focused on the exhibition's content.

Dream Studio resolved this dilemma by employing the language of “conceptual art” to completely dissolve realism. The centerpiece is a monumental chessboard crafted from mirrored steel. This contemporary installation embodies the element of “Water” through its shifting reflection over time while capturing the fluid oil-paint textures of the displayed artworks. Pieced together from two halves of Western chess and Eastern xiangqi, the chessboard serves as a poignant metaphor for King Ham Nghi’s life story, which was perpetually torn between East and West.

Positioned at the center of the chessboard is the installation “The Throne”: a core of Nguyen Dynasty motifs encased within a transparent shell, symbolizing imperial power isolated under Western pressure. These signature patterns were intentionally fragmented to reflect a weakening power structure that had lost its autonomy, yet the inner dignity and patriotic spirit remained enduringly present. This East-West convergence reached its peak as the ancient venue of the opening ceremony resonated with a symphony by Camille Saint-Saëns, the French composer intimately tied to the King's creative journey.

This project once again affirms the stature and versatility of Dream Studio on the journey of partnering with major cultural institutions, utilizing anti-symbolic thinking to preserve, decode, and elevate sustainable artistic heritage values.
