VỀ DỰ ÁN

In 2004, Sao Mai Diem Hen was launched through a co-production between Vietnam Television (VTV) and Dong Tay Promotion. The program focused on contemporary pop music and youthful performance styles, specifically targeting a younger demographic. By pioneering a novel approach to televised music competitions, the program rapidly emerged as a prominent platform, playing a crucial role in redefining the landscape of Vietnam's entertainment industry at the time.

Taking on the role of Stage Director, Viet Tu meticulously focused on how each contestant made their entrance and expressed their distinct personality on stage. Every detail, from their posture, stance, and stage blocking to the exact moment of their entrance, their audience interaction, and the precise synchronization of lighting, sound, and camera angles, was strategically calculated for each individual performance. The rehearsal process became a dynamic lab where staging concepts were continuously tested and refined to discover the most authentic mode of expression for every artist.

The primary creative challenge lay in generating continuous novelty without recycling existing performance tropes. Each contestant possessed a unique personality and musical color, requiring Viet Tu and the production team to architect ways to highlight these individual differences while strictly maintaining the program's overarching aesthetic. Operating under a highly compressed production schedule, critical decisions regarding stage design, lighting, audio, and artist entrances had to be executed with rapid precision.

Unlike a Broadcast Director, who must select camera shots in split seconds, a Stage Director has the bandwidth to construct and validate conceptual ideas prior to broadcast. However, during live broadcasts, both critical roles demand instantaneous reflexes and absolute precision in every decision. For Viet Tu, Sao Mai Diem Hen 2004 marked a pivotal career transition from Broadcast Director to Stage Director. This shift expanded his creative purview from merely controlling the broadcast frame to holistically architecting the performance space and choreographing how artists interact with their spatial environment.

Beyond its staging legacy, the program served as a powerful launchpad for numerous artists, including Tung Duong, Kasim Hoang Vu, Ngoc Khue, Cao Thai Son, and Nguyen Hong Nhung. These emerging figures significantly amplified the program's cultural impact on the mainstream music industry. The resounding success of the inaugural season was formally recognized when it won “Program of the Year” at the 2005 Pre-Dedication Music Awards (Tien Cong Hien).

For Viet Tu, Sao Mai Diem Hen 2004 stands as a definitive milestone in forging a stagecraft methodology centered entirely on the performer's personality. The program not only pioneered a novel approach to televised music competitions but also architected an incubator space for young artists to experiment, solidify their signature styles, and forge deeper connections with the mass public.
